The GREATS Wiki Project
What makes a civilization successful? Looking at ancient history, what aspects of a civilization show that a people thrived?
Following the emergence of cities in the river valleys, city-states developed. Our textbook defines city-state as “a political unit that included a city and its surrounding land and villages.” As leaders grew more ambitious and desired more resources, the first empires emerged. The textbook defines empire as “a group of territories controlled by one ruler.” Using the GREATS as a framework, we are going to work in groups to create a wiki page describing a variety of ancient empires. Each group will take care of one early empire.
· Persia · Ancient Greece (Athens and Sparta) · Maurya and Gupta (India) · Hellenistic Empire (Alexander’s empire) · Ancient Rome (Monarchy, Republic, and Empire) · Ancient China (Shang Dynasty) · Ancient Egypt
Requirements 1. Have each person in the group set up a wiki account and become a member of this wiki. 2. Create a new page titled this year, then your empire name followed by your class period (2011 Persia 3, or 2011 Hellenistic Empire 4, or 2011 China 5, etc.) 3. Meet with your group and assign roles (make sure that work is distributed evenly). Denote on your wiki page which part is each individuals (you can use colors, labels, whatever works, isn’t too big and eye-catching and looks good). 4. Research your empire on ABC-CLIO (username and password are both sharonstudent). You may also use your textbook. 5. Type in you bulleted list into you wiki page. 6. Find a relevant visual for each section. 7. As a group: write a summary of your civilizations main achievements and create a brief but catchy slogan for your civilization. Also find a map to include. 8. Make sure you fact check, edit, and spell check what is on your page.
PROJECT IS DUE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd. IT IS WORTH 30 POINTS
